Placement testing is an important part of your academic success and will help determine the writing and/or math course that is right for you to get started in your academic program. Placement scores also provide your program advisors information that they can use to better support your success as you progress through your academic program.
Placement for writing and reading courses can be obtained by taking the EdReady test. UAF uses a placement assessment called ALEKS to determine placement into math courses.
EdReady - Reading & Writing Placement
How do I take EdReady?
1.聽 聽 聽Log into to take your writing assessment. This can be done from any computer with an internet connection. You鈥檒l need your UAF username and password.
High school dual enrollment students: Obtain a Student ID and username by registering for your course(s) at .
UAF eCampus will then send you an email with your ID and username.

2.聽 聽 聽Select 鈥淕o to Goal鈥 for the Writing placement, the 鈥淪tart diagnostic鈥 to take the assessment. You will be given your score and study path once you are finished. Refer to the to see the recommended course(s) for your score.
3.聽 聽 聽If you didn鈥檛 get the score needed for the course you want to take, continue working on the study path in EdReady to improve your score.
4.聽 聽 聽Reach out to your advisor to get registered for your classes. Your advisor will have access to your placement score.
How long will the test take to complete?
Allow approx 45 mins – 1 hour to take the assessment the first time. If you decide to follow a study path for a higher placement, you can do this at your own pace. The assessment will save your progress so that you can return to it anytime.
Do I need to take this assessment at a testing center or arrange a proctor?
No, the EdReady writing assessment is not proctored. It can be taken from any computer with an internet connection.
How much does the assessment cost?
There is no charge for the EdReady writing assessment.
When will my results be available?
Your results will be available to you immediately after you finish the assessment. Your results will also be available to your advisor.
How do I know if I should follow a study path to increase my score or take the class the assessment first places me in?
The study paths in EdReady are designed to help you master the concepts needed to both increase your score and succeed in your writing classes. Your advisor can provide further information regarding the different levels of writing classes at UAF and what course aligns with your academic plans and goals.
ALEKS - Math Placement
ALEKS is a web-based assessment system that not only provides an initial assessment for math placement, but also an opportunity to practice and retest to improve your placement before you enroll. ALEKS placement is required before you will be allowed to register in any math (MATH) course at UAF.
When and Where can I take ALEKS?
ALEKS can be taken anytime, on any computer with an internet connection at聽
What do I need?聽聽 聽
Pencil, paper, a computer with internet access, and up to two hours to complete 20-30 questions. The ALEKS test is adaptive, so no time is wasted answering questions you don鈥檛 understand.
How long will the test take to complete?聽聽 聽
After starting the test, you will have up to 3 hours to complete the placement test and may retake ALEKS up to four times.

No charge.
When will my results be available?聽聽
Your test results will be available immediately, along with a detailed breakdown of your skills and instant access to online tutorials for skill improvement.
