The Empower Îçҹ̽»¨ Incentive Program supports employee contributions, enhances morale, improves processes, celebrates cost-saving measures, recognizes exceptional student services, and fosters employee engagement. UA employees across the system are doing amazing work — and this program helped us identify, recognize, and elevate some of that work and its impacts.
Presenting the four Grand Prize recipients of the Empower Îçҹ̽»¨ Incentive Program!
Each will receive a $5,000 prize and recognition at the September Board of Regents meeting. The four recipients were chosen from the top 12 nominations, three from each university and the System Office, for their extraordinary contributions to the university.
Jessica Salas (UAA) helped develop a new UA transfer credit process in Banner. The new process greatly eases the crunch between semester end and the start of the next semester, which translates into quicker service to students and academic advisors serving those students.
Ashley Munro (UAF) helped facilitate PIT Crew training and develop a strategic plan for the Registrar's office. These improvements to the Registrar’s workflows make academic record-keeping more efficient and accessible for students and faculty. The work also achieved considerable cost savings efficiencies, as well as helped UAF modernize countless student processes, saving critical time and resources.
Bernard (Bernie) Yadao (UAS) pulled double duty, keeping the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning systems running and performing services above and beyond his position's scope. By stepping up to provide these highly skilled services, he saved UAS tens of thousands of dollars each year by eliminating the need to hire independent contractors. And he did it all with a great attitude and display of character.
Kolene James (UAS) provides support and guidance for AK Native students in Juneau and via distance. Her focus on healing through education, harvesting, and community grows leaders and provides a nurturing environment for Indigenous People at our university, and has contributed greatly to our goals for increasing enrollment of Indigenous students.

Land Management | Kevin Kelly | Kevin led a strategic reduction in the System Office's office space usage, helping departments downsize quickly and efficiently while minimizing disruption. Result: Aida's work on improving website accessibility not only brought our digital platforms into WCAG 2.0 compliance with a score improvement from 52 to 99 but also set the stage for long-term compliance with the more rigorous WCAG 2.1 AA standards. | |

IANRE | Glenna Gannon | Ms. Gannon has demonstrated leadership and dedication to UAF and the State by responding to student needs - and the needs of Îçҹ̽»¨ - by building a high-latitude agriculture and food systems education and workforce preparedness program from the ground up. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Gannon applied her 5+ years of experience working for the Tribes Extension Program and collaborated with a colleague at the Georgeson Botanical Garden to respond to student requests for agricultural education and a place to learn how to grow food. Since that first pilot program, Gannon has continued to grow what is now the "Îçҹ̽»¨ Harvest Collaborative", a placed-based, hands-on learning program that teaches UAF students and volunteers about how to grow food in northern climates, and provides educational programming about the Îçҹ̽»¨n food system - how our food goes from seed, to market, to waste-streams. She and colleagues have raised over $50,000 in public awards, subaward contracts, and through fundraising with the UAF Foundation to purchase program supplies, equipment and hire seasonal staff. Gannon's efforts have created partnerships beyond UAF. Result: This effort demonstrates Gannon's dedication to responding to stakeholder's needs and intent to address some of the gaps in academic programming that were left in the wake of no longer having a Sustainable Agriculture degree at UAF. | |

Dr. Herrmann's expertise in accreditation standards, ability to synthesize data, and attention to detail were instrumental in compiling the data and writing the interim and final reports that led to a positive accreditation outcome. While maintenance of accreditation requires a team effort of the entire college, Dr. Herrmann's leadership and initiative were integral to successfully renewing our AACSB accreditation.
